NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES CAN BE A PROBLEM FOR PREGNANT WOMEN WITH IBD

Even if a woman follows a healthy diet, those with active IBD are at a greater risk for low nutritional levels (nutrient deficiencies) .  Why? Because acid blockers, inflammation of the intestines, diarrhea, and decreased appetite can alter the body's ability to absorb nutrients from the food eaten. Over time, this can lead to nutrient deficiencies which can be harmful to pregnant women as well as their developing child.

Previous studies have shown that diets higher in fruits, vegetables, vegetable oils, whole grains and fish help healthy mothers have bigger babies and longer pregnancies, so expectant moms have less chance of having a pre-term delivery. The question is: Can nutrition play as big a role for soon-to-be mothers with IBD and their babies? Or does it all depend on how sick the mothers are during their pregnancy?
