SubscribeNot much is known about the protein needs in ulcerative colitis (UC). Usually, the presence of chronic inflammation increases daily protein needs. In Crohn's disease, for example, protein needs are 25% higher than normal. Interestingly, some research suggests that higher protein can increase the risk of developing ulcerative colitis.
It is important to note that not all proteins are equal. A diet high in processed and red meat (like hot dogs, sausage, and lunch meats) had the greatest association between protein intake and UC development risk.
Since the research is still unclear on the exact protein recommendations, continue to eat the recommended amount of protein for your body weight. Additionally, including a variety of quality protein sources into the diet can help keep you healthy as you manage your UC symptoms.
