WHAT IS REFEEDING SYNDROME?

When someone is severely undernourished (malnourished), the start of feedings (IV, enteral or routine) can actually be dangerous because of a condition called Refeeding Syndrome. This can be seen in IBD but also in patients with anorexia, cancer, and the elderly. Crohnies or UCees who have lost weight quickly, those with poor appetite or poor absorption, and those who are already thin and frail are at the most risk.

Fluids, sugar and minerals shift rapidly into and out of the body's cells, causing low blood levels of serum phosphate, potassium, or magnesium.

Symptoms of Refeeding Syndrome include:

  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Heart irregularities
  • Seizures

The best ways to treat and prevent Refeeding Syndrome:

  • Recognize those who are at particular risk
  • Recognize the symptoms that can be present
  • Build up the feedings over several days
  • Monitor nutritional blood levels frequently and carefully
