But delaying surgery can allow Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis to progress and cause further problems and even more complicated surgery a short time later.
The good news is that after surgery, most patients feel much better and return to a healthier lifestyle. They may be able to lessen their medications and eat a wider variety of foods.
