FIRST SIGNS OF LOW ZINC (A ZINC DEFICIENCY)
If zinc levels are low, you or your child may show certain signs and symptoms that can indicate a deficiency. It is important to keep an open communication with your healthcare providers and express any concerns you may have regarding your symptoms and risk for nutrient deficiencies.
First Signs and Symptoms of a Zinc Deficiency:
- Weakness
- Decreased taste and appetite
- Slow healing
- White flecks in the nails
- Redness, especially at the elbows, knees and the patient's bottom
Later Signs and Symptoms of Zinc Deficiency:
- Decreased immune functioning
- Depression
- Diarrhea
- Hair loss
- Poor growth in children and teens
- Delayed sexual maturation
If your doctor suspects a zinc deficiency, usually from the presence of symptoms, diet history, and diarrhea, a simple blood test can be done to check zinc levels in the blood.
