SURGERY FOR A BLOCKAGE OR STRICTURE

A stricture is a narrowing that can occur in the small or large intestine. It can be short or long, and there can be more than one. If it is short narrowing without active disease there, the area or areas can be repaired sometimes, without removing any of the intestine. But a long section usually requires that the diseased section gets removed. This is called a resection. The normal ends on each side are then brought together (called an anastomosis). [picture both the stricture and the two ends brought together].
