SURGERY FOR CROHN'S DISEASE THAT'S NOT RESPONDING TO MEDICINE

When the medicines used to treat Crohn's disease aren't working, sections of active disease in the small or large intestine may be removed. Healthy areas on both sides often can be brought back together so the intestine is reconnected again. If there is large portion that needs to be removed, an ostomy may be needed either as a temporary measure or as a permanent way to allow a person with Crohn's to resume a healthier life / lifestyle.

Because Crohn's disease can come back in other areas, your doctor will want to carefully monitor your disease activity and progress. Medicines and repeat surgery may be necessary along with a healthy diet. If more bowel is taken out, less of the intestine will be there to absorb the nutrients and fluids. This can result in what is known as short bowel or short gut syndrome.
