TESTS FOR VITAMIN D
The best test for vitamin D levels is 25 (OH) Vitamin D. This test measures the vitamin D in your blood which indicates how much vitamin D is in your body. The normal level is 30 nanograms / milliliter (ng/ml). If vitamin D levels are below 20 ng/ml, you have a deficiency.
If vitamin D levels are low, your doctor will likely recommend a high strength vitamin D supplement to boost levels up to a normal range. You may have to continue taking vitamin D supplements if you live in northern climates, have dark skin, or avoid dairy. If not, you may be able to maintain vitamin D levels from diet and a little bit of sunshine.
