Nutrition is beginning to have an increasing role in our understanding and treatment of IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease-which are significant illnesses that affect the small and large intestine). The 2 main type are
Patients with IBD have a problem with their immune systems responding (often over-responding) to a yet-to-be-determined trigger. That is what is typically called an auto-immune condition. The primary treatments are medications decrease inflammation or prevent the immune system from overreacting.
