THE INCREASING ROLE OF NUTRITION IN IBD

Nutrition is beginning to have an increasing role in our understanding and treatment of IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease-which are significant illnesses that affect the small and large intestine). The 2 main type are

Patients with IBD have a problem with their immune systems responding (often over-responding) to a yet-to-be-determined trigger. That is what is typically called an auto-immune condition. The primary treatments are medications decrease inflammation or prevent the immune system from overreacting.

Those with IBD have a difficult time 

  • absorbing certain nutrients 
  • as many as 25% lose weight
  • some become anemic and malnourished
  • children and teens have a difficult time growing to their potential
  • some foods seem to irritate the intestine and cause more diarrhea, pain and bleeding
