THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF IRON DEFICIENCY

The symptoms of iron deficiency often come on slowly.  Iron levels are a balance of how much iron is being absorbed, how much is lost, and how much is being brought into the bloodstream from the muscles and liver. In IBD, the risks for iron deficiency are higher due to bleeding, a decreased appetite, or problems absorbing iron.

Symptoms of Iron Deficiency include:

  • Fatigue or chronic tiredness
  • Poor memory
  • Inability to concentrate in school
  • Anemia with pale skin
  • Increased infections (from decreased immune function)

If low iron (deficiency) is suspected, there are blood tests that your healthcare provider can do to guide treatment.
