Food Log

Tips for keeping the diary

  • Be very detailed – this is key.
  • List EVERYTHING swallowed, including water for three days (five days if your diet varies a lot).
  • Note the time you eat or drink and when any symptoms occur
  • Be very specific, include brand names, amount and how the food was prepared (baked, cooked in grapeseed oil, breaded)
  • If mixed food, list ingredients and amounts (½ cup rice and ¾ cup beans).

Common mistakes to avoid:

  1. Using "bites" or "handfuls" to describe amounts. Instead, use measurements such as teaspoon, tablespoon, ¼ cup, ½ cup. Estimate as closely as you can.
  2. Not being specific. Use "skim milk" or "whole milk." Include anything added (for example, 1 tbsp Hershey's chocolate syrup in 8 oz whole milk).
  3. Only using "fruit" or "veggie" with snacks sent to school. Use "four carrot sticks and six grapes."
