ADDING ZINC TO YOUR DIET

ADDING ZINC TO YOUR DIET

Fortunately, zinc is found in a variety of foods common in most diets including IBD friendly diets. This is good news considering the important roles zinc can play in IBD.

Good Sources of Zinc:

  • Seafood: oysters, crab, shrimp
  • Meat: beef, beef liver, dark meat chicken, pork, lamb
  • Milk and Cheese: cheddar, mozzarella, muenster, American, Swiss
  • Grains: rice, wheat, whole wheat bread, cereals, oatmeal
  • Nuts and Seeds: cashews, hemp, flax and pumpkin
  • Beans and Peas: peanuts, lentils, legumes, green peas
  • Eggs (also a great source of choline

Unfortunately, even with adequate amounts of zinc consumed in the diet, those with IBD may still be at risk for low zinc levels (zinc deficiency). If you or your child have symptoms of low zinc levels, be sure to talk to your doctor about ways to manage and treat your low zinc levels.
