CAUTION IS NEEDED FOR ELIMINATION DIETS IN IBD
Whether you are eliminating potential trigger foods from your diet, or are following a special diet for IBD, it is important to take precautions to avoid nutrient deficiencies.
Reasons to be Cautious On an Elimination or Special Diet:
- Nutrient levels can be low when certain foods are eliminated from the diet such as:
- Grains which provide protein, B vitamins and minerals
- Fiber– containing foods which can lower B and C vitamins and mineral levels
- Eggs which have biotin and protein
- The more foods you eliminate, the harder it is to stay on the diet
- Eliminating foods increases the chance of losing weight, bone, muscle and vital nutrients
- The stress of staying on the diet makes some people anxious, irritable or depressed
