SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY

Spotting a vitamin B12 deficiency can be tricky, especially in those with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our bodies keep stores of vitamin B12 for when our intake is low or it cannot be properly absorbed from the diet (as seen in Crohnies and some UCees). This means that a vitamin B12 deficiency can develop slowly  and the symptoms can appear gradually.

These are some signs and symptoms that can indicate risk for a B12 deficiency:

  • anemia
  • fatigue or irritability
  • numbness or tingling in the feet, legs, or hands
  • weakness or difficulty walking
  • poor balance
  • memory loss, difficulty thinking or hallucinations

If you or your child develops any of these symptoms, it is important to mention your concerns to your healthcare provider. Your doctor can do the appropriate tests and correct any deficiencies before they develop further.
