THE BEST SOURCES OF CALCIUM

THE BEST SOURCES OF CALCIUM

We all know dairy is one of the best sources of calcium. However, while milk is widely available, many people have trouble digesting milk due to lactose intolerance. Fortunately, there are other sources of calcium that will help us keep our bones strong and prevent osteoporosis

Best Sources of Calcium:

  • Dairy foods (milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.)
  • Milk alternatives (soy, oat, almond, etc.)
  • Seafood (sardines, oysters, clams, etc.)
  • Vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, turnip greens)
  • Fortified foods (cereal, bread, orange juice, tofu)
  • Supplements (calcium citrate or calcium carbonate)

For those with IBD, absorption of calcium may be inhibited and you may need to take a calcium supplement in addition to dietary sources. We recommend calcium citrate supplements if you are on acid blockers because it absorbs better in low acid conditions.
